Nakajima Masutane (中島錫胤)

Masutane NAKAJIMA (December 8, 1830 – October 4, 1905) was a bureaucrat in the Meiji Period.
He used to be a feudal retainer of Tokushima Domain
He was born in Sako (Tokushima City), Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture. His other name was Eikichi NAKAJIMA. He changed his name to Masutane after the Meiji Restoration. His gravestone is located in Toyoshima Ward, Tokyo.

Career

In 1844, he made the decision to move to Edo to follow the chief retainer INADA at the Yushima Seido

In 1851, he changed his name to Eikichi NAKAJIMA when he was adopted by a long time Confucian Ryoin NAKAJIMA after becoming his disciple.

In 1852, he was imprisoned for the Sakuradamon incident for having contact with Magojiro KANEKO and Taichiro TAKAHASHI but was later forgiven.

In 1869, he became the governor of Hyogo Prefecture.

In 1884, he became a councilor of the Senate.

In 1889, he became the governor of Yamanashi Prefecture.

In 1896, he received the title Baron. He was elected as a councilor of the House of Peers.
